March Blog

February saw Ashley and Jette Baker getting stuck in to their new project – St James’s Apartments in the middle of Bath. Externally the Bath Tap pub as was, still looks the same but we have taken out 7 skip loads of rubbish and old building materials. We had one whole load of metal which we have recycled and a similar amount of wood which was also recycled. Some of the wood has had the nails and screws removed and we have re-used it building stud work and as battens for new wall linings.

The electricians and plumbers have spent the last 4 week stripping out all the old circuits and pipes as we are completely renewing everything. Building regulations have improved , so an upgrade was required, but we want to provide a high quality flat with first class facilities, so everything will be new.

We want to be environmentally friendly so we are installing insulation that is sympathetic to an old georgian building. The Georgian windows will be refurbished and draft proofed, but we cannot double glaze them due to the listed building status and we are waiting to hear from the planning office whether secondary glazing will be allowed. Here’s a sneak of the new copper bath – mostly still under wraps -but a sign of the exciting features to come in the new “St James’s Apartments”

At Ashley Villa, Adriana and Elias the new Managers have settled in well and are already providing a first class service to our guests as the many very positive trip advisor reviews and other web reviews will prove. They are getting to know Bath very quickly and have visited many of the Bath Attractions including the Thermae Spa. A couple of the bedrooms have had a fresh lick of paint to freshen them up, and we have ordered 3 new single beds for the single room and a twin room. Our lounge is also getting some new sofas to replace the tub chairs providing more seating and we hope a cosy feel.

We are looking forward to the Bath Half Marathon this weekend and Jette is supporting the  “Great Comic Relief Bake off” by selling cakes and drinks from the Ashley Villa car park to the many people who will be watching the race. Adriana has volunteered to make some Romanian buns and some of Jette’s friend are also brining along cakes, brownies and biscuits to sell. There is a band that plays opposite Ashley Villa for the duration of the Race so we can expect a great atmosphere and all the money taken will go to a good cause. We will let you know how it went in next months blog so keep in touch!

We were pleased to see the back of the snow in Bath last week. After several
cancellations at Ashley Villa due to the snow we are now seeing a pick up in
bookings.
We have new Managers at Ashley Villa. Elias Constanteas and Adriana Stoica.
Elias, as you might guess from his surname is Greek but grew up in Canada
and Adriana is Romanian. Both have extensive experience in the hotel
industry and speak excellent English. We wish them well in settling into
Ashley Villa and you will find a a warm welcome from them both on arrival.

Bath Rugby hosted Exeter Chiefs in the LV cup last week end. We had good
sunny weather after the overnight gales and Bath came out winners 16-6
after two ties from Ireland scrum half Peter Stringer who really added some
zip when he came on at half time.

Ashley and Jette went out to celebrate Jette’s birthday over the week end
and had cocktails in Sub13 in George St where they offer 2 for 1 until 8pm.
It was packed , but we managed to get to the bar and the weather conditions
outside steered us to try a couple of “Dark and Stormy” cocktails, which
went down a treat and set us up for a great meal out with 18 friends.

Bath Half Marathon No Parking signs

Getting ready for Bath Half Marathon, Sunday 3 March

The signs are going up around the town notifying everyone of the parking
restrictions for the Bath Half Marathon taking place on Sunday 3rd March. If
you are thinking of coming to Bath that week end we suggest you book now as
we have now sold most of our availability for that week end.

The big news this month however is that Queensberry Estates has bought a new
property in central Bath. The Bath Tap was a pub with a certain reputation,
but proved to be commercially unviable and was put on the market last
Autumn. We have acquired the freehold and intend to convert the property in
to two large self-catering flats. We are working hard on the designs to
bring two great stylish properties for groups to stay in Bath.
Watch this space for updates on the development, but we are targeting the
first flat to be finished this summer.
